Laurel City is a concept plan for a large-scale housing development that would provide housing for unhoused individuals.
Laurel City would be built primarily of shipping containers. Shipping container home construction is faster and more efficient than standard home construction, and there is less waste involved. Container homes can be built and outfitted inside a factory and transported to the site. Laurel City would have housing for singles, couples, families, and the elderly. Laurel City would be a safe community with police, fire, and a 24/7 neighborhood security patrol.
Laurel City would have many amenities to serve the residents. Health services would include an urgent care facility, treatment facilities, mental wellness facility, a hospital, and pharmacy. There would be a K-12 school as well as job training and placement for adults. A community center would offer classes, a fitness center, game room, childcare, a library, and computer lab. A Main Street area would have "shops" offering donated clothing, household items, groceries, a cafeteria and cafe. A large community garden would provide fruit and vegetables for the cafeteria and grocery store.
